City Cat Ferries – Project Overview

Written by Vulcan. Posted in City Cat Ferries

These are the models of Ferries operating on the Brisbane River, and selected river bridges. Ferries include older designs, modern catamarans, and the ferry landing terminals along the river. They are passenger enabled to load passengers at the ferry landings.

In 2011 floods in the Brisbane river demolished a number of the landings and these have been rebuilt, with some being redesigned.

The models use coloured invisible track set at zero metres (ground level) and the water level at -3 metres. Generally a sea bed at -6 metres is sufficient, making the river banks not too steep. Adjust the height of the landings to suit, so the attached invisible track is at zero metres. A system of speed signs and invisible signals is required for AI operations.

The bridges include the Merrivale rail bridge, the William Jolly road bridge and the older Victoria road and tram bridge, now demolished.

City Cat Ferries

Driveable catamaran City Cat ferries. The original vessel design will load 150 passengers, is 25 metres long and has a top speed of 30 knots, but is restricted to 26 knots for river use. This is a model of the earlier design catamaran.

The mast navigation lights are the distinctive two pulse flasher as used on the ferry and the ferry is passenger enabled.

The interior views in the City Cats are cycled using the [ and ] keys.

The ferry is renamable with a choice of eight names and associated serial numbers, to match those vessels in service. They are named after the Aboriginal place names for various parts of the Brisbane River and adjacent areas. The names that can be selected in Surveyor are:

Barrambin (Bowen Hills)
Baneraba (Toowong)
Binkinba (New Farm)
Kurilpa (West End)
Mianjin (Gardens Point)
Mirbarpa (Indooroopilly)
Mooroolbin (Hamilton Sandbank) and
Tugulawa (Bulimba)

Ferries John Oxley and Mermaid

Older design small passenger ferries used on the Brisbane river for cross river passengers. They are passenger enabled and operate on track 3 metres above water level. They use the red track closest to the landing terminals for operation.

City Cat Landing Terminals

Written by Vulcan. Posted in City Cat Ferries

The landing terminals have three attached tracks, for passenger operations for the Brisbane ferries. The Inner track is 3 metre from the landing for narrow ferries such as the John Oxley, and the middle track is 4.5 metres from the landing for the wider City Cat. A third track further from the lanidng stage is suitable for larger river craft, and the Catalina Flying Boat aircraft.

The height of the terminals is adjusted so the invisible track is set 3 metres above water level. Additional invisible track is attached for the ferry operation.

There are 15 terminal models available based on the actual terminals on the Brisbane river.

River Navigation Buoys – Speed Control

Written by Vulcan. Posted in City Cat Ferries

Coloured invisible track is available in red, green, blue and purple, it is visible in Surveyor and the Minimap, but invisible in Driver.

The City Cat ferries have a maximum speed of 26 knots (48 kph) on the Brisbane River. Speed signs are modelled as buoys, to control speeds in Trainz, and are for 6 knots and 26 knots. The buoys are animated to simulate rocking in a ship wake, and have flashing lights, available in red and green.

There are additional navigation buoys, in normal navigation, the red buoy is used to the left of the ship when leaving a harbour and the green will be on the left when entering a harbour.

The default red and green arrow track switches can be replaced by a switch buoy, to operate track points or switches.  They attach to the invisible track placed 3 metres above the water level and are offset 7 metres from the track, red to the left, green to the right.
